When East meets West: understanding and engaging Asian learners
8 juin 2020 @ 13 h 00 min - 14 h 30 min
Our business, academic and personal worlds will only become increasingly multicultural as globalization and international movement forge ahead. As global economies flourish, especially in China and India, more students and professionals aspire to travel abroad to pursue academic and career opportunities in hopes that they can attain global competitiveness.
If you work within a multicultural environment and your role involves interaction with a diverse audience – as an administrator at an academic institution, an educator, a corporate trainer, a coach, or a consultant – your understanding across cultures will save you hours of frustrations and misunderstanding that can otherwise be invested in building positive rapport with your learners.
With 30+ years of professional experience from both Canada and the Asia Pacific, Cecilia Lui will share her experience with diverse learners and clients on the following points:
· Cultural values – how do they play out in the learning environment
· How personalities of learners play a bigger role than cultural knowledge
· Adapting our communication skills for positive connections
· Engaging and building trust with your learners
· Feedback & Face – the delicate balance between delivering truths and advice
· Handling the Yesses that actually mean NOs
· Handling disagreements, conflicts, feedback across cultures
· The skills and attributes that make the world of difference in classroom management
